暴力的な父親殺しの罪で断頭台へ向かう直前のベアトリーチェは、
斬首に際して髪の毛で斧の刃が滑るのを防ぐために
ターバンを巻いて、その時を待ったという。
しかし、力なく振り返った彼女の眼には、
これから死を迎えることへの絶望感ではなく、
ある種の「希望＝光」が輝いて見える。

デッサンも終わりに差し掛かった頃、
青年はアトリエ内にある絵の中から一枚の肖像画を見つけ、
譲って欲しいと申し出る。
それは15年前、レーニがまだ画家見習いであった頃に描いた少女
ベアトリーチェ・チェンチであった。
レーニは譲り渡すことを拒んだが、青年の熱意に負け、

その悲劇的な運命は多くの文筆家・芸術家に影響を与えた。
彼女の悲運はその父、フランチェスコ・チェンチの娘に生まれたことにある。
フランチェスコ・チェンチは獰猛な人物で、
暴力や虐待など非道の限りを尽くしながらも、
富と権力を盾に幾度となくその罪を逃れていた。
暴虐は時が経つにつれ一層激しくなり、
後妻のルクレツィアと共にローマの田舎に移り住んだ頃には、狂気と化す。
やがて類稀ない美しい女性に成長したベアトリーチェにもその手は及び、
彼女を監禁し陵辱を繰り返すようになった。
ベアトリーチェは、ローマ当局に告訴するもまったく取り合ってもらえず、
ついにこの窮境から逃れるため尊属殺人（父親殺し）を計画。
ルクレツィア、使用人等とともに実行に移したのである。
転落事故を装ったものの計画はすぐに露見し、
検視と凄惨な拷問の結果、全員が極刑を宣告された。
処刑前日、1599年9月10日。
肖像を描くことを命じられたレーニがベアトリーチェのもとを訪れる。
そこは窓ひとつない、壁の半分が地下に埋まった暗い独房。
レーニは彼女の真実を写し取ろうと筆を取る。
